Will early PS3s ship with PS2 hardware built-in?  Signs point to yes.  Microsoft is finding backwards compatibility hard to implement in software.  I imagine Sony will have just as much difficulty.  It is not impossible, as the PC based console emulation scene is testiment, but it is still hard and requires lots of CPU power.  Perhaps Sony will be better in the long run to just do it in hardware.  As the PS2 chipset is now basically one chip, over the lifetime of the PS3, production of this chip could get even cheaper, perhaps even one day getting integrated into the core Cell processor in the PS3.  It might be less troublesome than doing things entirely in software.  We will have to wait and see.
