OMG, if this article on TheInquirer.net is to be believed and his take on the numbers true then the PS3 hardware could well be slow and broken. I wish I saw this article before the Cell related talk I went to on Thursday given by a chap from Mercury Computer Systems. I could have grilled him on this. What the hell is the point of having 256k of on-die RAM for the SPEs to talk to if it can only do 16MB/s. Or perhaps The Inquirer and I are both interpreting the slides incorrectly or out of context. Maybe it just refers to the relative read/write performance of different memory types for the RSX processor. In that case it makes sense that it is slow for the RSX to read out of Cell (SPE) Local Memory. I guess time will tell whether this matters.
